1. At the beginning of the 20th century, the number of
tigers in the wild was around 100 000.
a number of…意思是“一些，若干”（= some），后接可数名词复数或代词，谓语动词用复数形式。还可以加入形容词表示数量大或小等（例如：a large/small number of…许多/少数……）。
例：There are a large number of monkeys in the zoo .
动物园里有很多猴子。
the number of…意思是“……的数字/数目”，介词of同其后名词构成介词短语，修饰the number.当它作主语时，谓语动词用单数 。例：
The number of students is about twenty.
学生的数目大约二十。Many people took part in 10,000-metre race, but only a number of them kept on running to the end .
很多人参加了1万米赛跑，但是他们中只有一些人跑到了最后。
2. But today that number has dropped to a few thousand.
a few thousand表示“几千”。当hundred, thousand前面是基数词one, two, three…a few, many时，其后不加s。当hundred和thousand后面加s时，需要跟of修饰可数名词复数。例：
