过去进行时
基本概念:过去进行时表示在过去某一时刻或某一段时间内进行或发生的动作。
主语+was/were + doing +其他内容
注:doing 就是现在分词,词形变化与现在进行时相同
常用的时间状语:

1. 过去进行时的基本用法主要表示过去某一时间正在进行的动作。 如:
He fell asleep when he was reading.
他看书时睡着了。
2. 过去进行时表示现在主要是为了使语气委婉、客气。 如:
I was wondering if you could give me a lift.
我不知你能否让我搭一下车
【注】一般过去时也有类似用法,但比较而言,用过去进行时显得更客气,更不肯定。能否让我搭一下车。
3. 过去进行时表示感情色彩与现在进行时相似,过去进行时也可表示满意、称赞、惊讶、厌恶等感情色彩,也通常与 always, forever, continually等副词连用。 如:
They were always quarrelling.
他们老是吵架。

一般过去时与过去进行时的区别
1、一般过时往往表示某一动作已经完成,而过去进行时却表示动作在持续或未完成。
She wrote a letter to her friend last night.
她昨晚给朋友写了封信。 (信写完了)
She was writing a letter to her friend last night. 她昨晚一直在给朋友写信。 (信不一定写完)
2、一般过去时表示只做一次动作,而过去进行时却表示动作反复地进行。

when和while的区别
(一) when,while都有“当……时候”的意思。when既可表示某一点时间,也可以表示某一段时间。
在when引导的时间状语从句中,其谓语动词可以是延续性的,也可以是非延续性的,可与主句中的谓语动词同时发生,也可在其后发生。如:
I was just reading a book when she came into my room.
她走进我房间时,我正在看书。
Were you writing when the teacher came in?
老师进来的时候,你在写信吗?
When he was a child, he was always trying out new ideas.
他小时候就常常试验一些新的设想。
(二) while只能表示某一段时间,不能表示某一点时间。在while引导的时间状语从句中,其谓语动词只能是延续性的,而且也只能与主句中的谓语动词同时发生或存在。如:
While Jim was mending his bike, Lin Tao came to see him.
正当吉姆修自行车时,林涛来看他。
You can’t do your homework while you’re watching TV.
你不能一边看电视一边做家庭作业。
(三) when和while的区别还在于: while引导的时间状语从句多用进行时态,而when引导的时间状语从句多用一般时态。如:

when,while,as都可以引导时间状语从句,但用法区别非常大。
一、when可以和延续性动词连用,也可以和短暂性动词连用;而while和as只能和延续性动词连用。

二、由when引导的时间状语从句,如果主句是过去进行时,从句应该用一般过去时,表示一个动作正在进行的时候另一个动作突然发生了,强调后一动作发生的突然性。
